Getting to Dundubara from Orchid Blue

From Orchid Blue, Dundubara is a 45-minute 4WD drive south along 75 Mile Beach. Access is tide-dependent, so plan your trip 2 hours either side of low tide, checking times at https://www.bom.gov.au/.

A high-clearance 4WD with low-range functions is required, along with a Vehicle Access Permit (RAM) from https://parks.desi.qld.gov.au/, costing $61.80 for one month as of July 2026. A camping permit is also required, priced at $7.75 per person per night or $31 per family per night.

The drive takes you past scenic spots like Champagne Pools and Waddy Point, with soft sand near Indian Head requiring tyre pressure of 12–16 psi for better traction.

Safety and Tips for Dundubara

Dundubara’s fenced sites provide added safety against dingoes, but precautions are still necessary—secure food in dingo-proof containers, keep children within the fenced area, and bury scraps 50 cm deep. The Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation recommends staying within designated camping zones to avoid environmental damage and fines.

Use the provided facilities to minimize impact, and bring a portable toilet for waste management if needed. Fires are allowed in fire rings, but adhere to fire bans during dry periods, especially in summer. Pack insect repellent for sandflies, particularly at dusk, and a first aid kit for minor injuries, as medical services are limited on the island.
