Camping at Ocean Lake
Ocean Lake camping zone is a designated beachfront area with open sites along the eastern shoreline, offering stunning ocean views and the soothing sound of waves. The sites are set above the high-tide mark, surrounded by low dunes and native vegetation like casuarinas, providing a natural barrier from the wind.
There are no facilities, so campers must be self-sufficient, bringing water, a portable toilet, and other essentials. Campfires are permitted above the high-tide mark, but you must bring your own untreated, milled timber, as collecting wood on Fraser Island (K’gari) is prohibited.
Managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), the area is kept pristine, with sites spaced to ensure privacy while offering easy access to the nearby lake and beach.
Getting to Ocean Lake from Orchid Blue
A high-clearance 4WD with low-range functions is required, along with a Vehicle Access Permit (RAM) from https://parks.desi.qld.gov.au/, costing $61.80 for one month as of July 2026. A camping permit is also required, priced at $7.75 per person per night or $31 per family per night.
The lake itself is a 1 km drive inland from the beach via a sandy track, making it easily accessible for a refreshing swim after setting up camp.
Safety and Tips for Ocean Lake
Ocean Lake is safe for camping, but dingo precautions are crucial—secure food in dingo-proof containers, keep children close, and bury scraps 50 cm deep to avoid attracting wildlife.
The Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation advises camping above the high-tide mark to avoid flooding, and checking tide times to prevent being cut off.
With no facilities, bring a 20-liter water container, a portable toilet, and a waste bag to pack out all rubbish, preserving the area’s natural beauty. Use sand pegs for your tent to secure it in the sandy ground, and pack insect repellent for sandflies, especially at dusk. A first aid kit is essential, as medical services are limited on the island.
