Orchid Blue Holiday House - The History
Orchid Blue wasn’t built to be just another holiday house. It grew from the combination of the original owner’s love for this stretch of coast and an old-school German builder’s skill and dedication to quality workmanship.
Between 1989 and 1991, the builder—well known around Orchid Beach for his careful craft—took on the project. He and his crew camped on site for six months, working entirely by hand. No machines were used, not even for the foundations. Every post hole was dug with shovels, and each treated pine post was set in place one by one.
At the center of the home stands a single hardwood tree trunk more than 16 meters tall, buried three meters deep and running through all four levels. Visible throughout the house, it still serves as both the anchor and the heart of the structure.
The first owner, Robert Crawford, bought the land in the 1980s and completed the build in 1991. Robert came from farming—first peanuts, then pioneering the commercial growing of seedless watermelons in Australia. His success allowed him to build Orchid Blue with the kind of attention and durability that went far beyond the basics. Among locals, it’s still often called “Crawford’s House.”
When the current owners purchased the property in 2019, it was showing its age. Since then, they’ve taken on a steady restoration—carefully maintaining the home’s character while updating its features for modern holiday living. The result is a place that still reflects its history, but now also welcomes guests with the comfort and ease of a true island retreat.
