Fast Facts About Fraser: Australia’s Purest Dingoes

Fraser Island (K’gari) is home to one of the purest remaining strains of dingo in Australia. Current estimates put the population at around 200 dingoes, with adults averaging around 18 kg and standing up to 60 cm tall.

They’re often described as carrying no domestic dog DNA — though it’s fair to say (as some older locals will tell you) that claim gets questioned, and Queensland’s own park managers note that fully confirming genetic purity with certainty is still an ongoing scientific challenge.

They hunt in small packs and tend to move quietly through the dunes and forest edges rather than announcing themselves. You may well spot one along the beach during your stay — but it’s worth remembering these are wild animals, not pets, and shouldn’t be treated or fed like one.

You will need to drive outside the Orchid Beach dingo fence these days to see these beautiful creatures, but don’t worry — it’s rare to take a drive without seeing one or two!
