The waters around Fraser Island (K’gari) are home to some of the ocean’s great shape-shifters: cephalopods. Several species share these waters, among them the giant cuttlefish — one of the largest cuttlefish species in the world, reaching up to a metre in length including its arms. Like all cuttlefish, it can change colour and pattern in seconds using specialised skin cells, making it a master of disguise against the reef and rock.
When startled, cuttlefish and their relatives can jet away in a sudden burst of speed, squirting a cloud of ink behind them to cover their escape — a trick that comes in handy in the shallow, rocky waters near Champagne Pools, just a 15-minute drive from Orchid Blue.
Orchid Blue Holiday House is positioned in a prime location to experience the best of the island — including the waters around Champagne Pools, just 5km south.
