Fraser Island’s (K’gari) mangroves do quiet, essential work protecting the coastline — nowhere more so than at Wathumba Creek, on the island’s remote western side, where extensive mangrove forests line the tidal shallows. Their tangled root systems act as a natural nursery, sheltering crabs, fish and birdlife in the brackish water where land meets sea.
These tough plants thrive in salty, waterlogged sand where few others can, holding the shoreline together and buffering it against the tides. It’s a reminder that some of the island’s most important ecosystems are also its quietest.
Wathumba Creek is about 20km west of Orchid Blue — roughly a 45-minute to 1-hour 4WD drive via Ocean Lake. Our Complete Guide to Wathumba Creek has the full directions.
