At low tide, Wathumba Creek’s broad tidal sandflats come alive with a mesmerising sight — thousands of tiny blue soldier crabs marching in formation across the wet sand, in swirling patterns that look almost choreographed. They dig into the sand with a distinctive spiral motion as they feed, and when startled, the whole army can vanish in seconds, burrowing backward before re-emerging minutes later to resume their parade.
Kids in particular love watching them scatter and regroup — and it rewards good timing: the crabs surface as the tide falls, so planning your visit around low tide makes all the difference.
Wathumba Creek is about 20km west of Orchid Blue — roughly a 45-minute to 1-hour 4WD drive via Ocean Lake. Our Complete Guide to Wathumba Creek has the full directions.
