Fast Facts About Fraser: 75 Mile Beach, the Island’s Sandy Highway

75 Mile Beach is exactly what it sounds like — a roughly 120 km stretch of sand along Fraser Island’s (K’gari) eastern coast that doubles as a legal, gazetted road, complete with an 80 km/h speed limit. It’s used by 4WDs and, at low tide on the right stretch, light aircraft.

It’s also lined with some of the island’s best-known landmarks — the Maheno shipwreck, Indian Head, and the Pinnacles among them. Ocean swimming isn’t recommended along most of it — strong currents and the open surf make it a lookers-not-swimmers beach, so stick to the freshwater creeks and lakes for a dip.

You’ll get to know this beach well during your stay — it’s the road you’ll drive to reach Orchid Blue and most of the island’s northern attractions.
