Fraser Island (K’gari) is a genuinely excellent spot for birdwatching, with everything from sea eagles soaring over the dunes to tiny fairy-wrens darting through the heath. The island’s wetlands also host migratory waders — species like the eastern curlew, which travel enormous distances each year along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway between Australia and their breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere.
Keep an eye out, too, for rainbow lorikeets adding a splash of colour, and — if you’re lucky — the white-throated needletail, widely regarded as the fastest bird in level (non-diving) flight, reaching speeds over 160 km/h.
