Indian Head is one of the few genuinely ancient things on Fraser Island (K’gari) — everything around it is sand, but Indian Head itself is solid volcanic rock, formed around 30 million years ago, long before the island’s dunes existed. It was named by Captain Cook on 19 May 1770, as he sailed past and spotted a group of Butchulla people gathered on the headland.
From the top, it’s a genuinely commanding lookout, with regular sightings of sharks, rays, turtles and (in season) whales in the water below.
Indian Head is just 7 km south of Orchid Blue — around a 10–15 minute 4WD drive along 75 Mile Beach. Our Complete Guide to Indian Head has the full directions.
