Middle Rocks, near Waddy Point on Fraser Island’s (K’gari) northern coast, is one of the handful of places on the island where solid volcanic rock breaks through the sand — genuinely ancient, tens of millions of years old, and a world apart from the young dune systems around it.
Fraser Island itself is remarkably young by geological standards — research suggests its dune fields began forming somewhere around 700,000 to 900,000 years ago — but the rock outcrops here predate all of that sand by a vast margin, standing as the island’s true geological bones.
Middle Rocks sits right alongside Waddy Point, just 3km — a 5-minute drive from Orchid Blue, one of the closest genuinely ancient sights to the house. Our Complete Guide to Waddy Point has the details.
