Fast Facts About Fraser: Whale Watching From the Decks

Each winter, the waters off Hervey Bay and Fraser Island (K’gari) turn into a world-famous stage for the ocean’s most magnificent performers — the humpback whales. From around July through October, thousands of humpbacks move north along the coast to breed, with an estimated 7,000 or more passing close to K’gari in a single season as part of the roughly 30,000-strong East Australian population. It’s one of the only places on Earth where whales linger rather than just pass by — rolling, tail-slapping, and spy-hopping just offshore.

Adult humpbacks can weigh around 40 tonnes, and watching one launch clear of the water in a full breach, then crash back down in a thunderous splash, is a genuinely electric sight — the kind that leaves even seasoned travellers speechless. Calves are a regular feature too, rising to the surface alongside their mothers as they learn to breach in the calmer waters close to shore.

And you don’t need to be out on the water to see it. Guests staying at Orchid Blue tell us again and again how much they loved watching whales breach right from the house’s own decks — the top two levels look straight out over the water, and during whale season it’s not unusual to spend a whole afternoon up there with a drink in hand, watching the show play out on the horizon without going anywhere at all.
