Fast Facts About Fraser: Perched Lakes, K’gari’s Sky-High Pools

Fraser Island (K’gari) holds around 40 perched lakes — roughly half of all the perched lakes known on the planet. They’re formed when sand and organic matter trap rainwater high above the ordinary water table, so unlike most lakes, they’re topped up by rainfall alone rather than groundwater.

Lake Boomanjin, on the island’s southern half, is recognised as the largest perched lake in the world. Closer to home, Lake McKenzie — which we wrote about a few weeks back — is the perched lake most of our guests get to experience, and it’s proof you don’t need to visit all 40 to understand why this phenomenon is so special.

You don’t need to see all 40 to appreciate them — start with the ones closest to Orchid Blue in our attractions guide.
