Keep an eye on the sand at your feet on Fraser Island (K’gari) and you’ll almost certainly spot ghost crabs — small, pale, and remarkably quick, darting sideways across the beach before diving straight down into their burrows. They’re most active after dark, when they come out to scavenge, and their eyes sit on stalks that give them an excellent, wide field of view for spotting danger (or an unguarded picnic).
Take a walk along the beach out front after dark and you’ll likely spot the parade yourself — see what else is close by to the house in our attractions guide.
