Fraser Island (K’gari) exists because of wind. Prevailing winds have carried sand up the coast over several hundred thousand years, building the dunes we see today grain by grain — and the process hasn’t stopped. The same winds keep reshaping the island’s sandblows and dune systems, including Hammerstone Sandblow near Lake Wabby, right now.
It’s a genuinely rare thing to be able to watch geology happen in real time, and K’gari is one of the best places on Earth to do it.
It’s one of the quieter wonders playing out right on Orchid Beach’s doorstep — see what else is close by to the house in our attractions guide.
