Fast Facts About Fraser: The Island’s Scaly Residents

Fraser Island (K’gari) is home to a good variety of reptiles, from sand monitors (goannas) that can grow well over a metre long and move surprisingly fast when they want to, to smaller tree-climbing lace monitors and plenty of skinks sunning themselves along the tracks.

There are venomous snakes here too — eastern browns and death adders among them — but sightings are genuinely rare. Snakes feel ground vibrations long before you get close and tend to clear off well before you’d ever notice them.

Keep an eye on the tracks and dunes around Orchid Beach and you’ll likely spot one — see what else you might come across nearby in our attractions guide.
