From around November to February, loggerhead and green turtles nest on Fraser Island’s (K’gari) beaches, each clutch typically holding somewhere in the range of 100–150 eggs. After around eight weeks of incubation, the hatchlings dig their way out and race for the water — a journey that’s as vulnerable as it is remarkable, since only a small fraction of hatchlings survive to adulthood.
If you’re on the island during nesting or hatching season, it’s a genuinely special thing to witness — just give any nests and hatchlings plenty of space and follow any ranger guidance you come across.
