Swamp wallabies are one of the quieter residents of Fraser Island (K’gari), moving through the heathlands mostly around dawn and dusk. They’re one of only a handful of native mammal species that call the island home, alongside the bats and echidnas.
They’re shy, and most guests only catch a glimpse — an ear twitching in the scrub, or a shape bounding off into the heath — but the heath right around Orchid Beach is exactly the kind of habitat they favour, so keep an eye out on an early morning or evening walk near the house.
