Fast Facts About Fraser: The Island’s Logging Legacy

From 1863 to 1991, Fraser Island’s (K’gari) forests were logged for their prized satinay and kauri pine timber — a chapter of the island’s history that shaped much of what you see today, including the old tramways that now double as walking and hiking trails.

Conservation efforts eventually brought the logging era to a close, and much of the forest has since reclaimed the silence, growing back into the rainforest that helped earn K’gari its UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Central Station — once the hub of the island’s logging operation — is now one of the best places to see this recovery for yourself. It’s about 110 km south of Orchid Blue, roughly a 2-hour 4WD drive. Our Complete Guide to Central Station has the details.
